This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Today and tomorrow, I will be sharing a story with you about a family that shows exactly what is right with Utah.
Our story starts with Rebecca Broadbent Sato and a meeting she had with Rio Tinto's Kennecott Land. During the meeting, she got a vision of just what the over 4,000 acre Daybreak community has to offer. She also saw how Rio Tinto supports small, locally-owned businesses.
She presented her business vision about a specialized daycare program, based on her experience teaching at a fine arts school in Russia. She hoped to create a high-end arts and music program. Rebecca was further motivated by her own two-hour drive for daycare. . . so she founded Daybreak Arts Academy.
This specialized program is a center where parents feel good about dropping off their kids. It's a daycare like you may not have seen. We're talking a concert pianist and Suzuki violin. Rebecca teaches yoga, serves organic food and shows students how to appreciate visual and performing art history by studying the great masters and learning dances from the 1600s. You will love this — she built a garden box so the kids could grow their own food. She was also determined to build Daybreak's first green business. Because of her focus and determination The Daybreak Arts Academy is close to carbon neutral, geothermal and has a windmill.
It was clear to me just what a visionary Rebecca is and sitting across from me was one of the main reasons why: her mom, Jan Broadbent. This amazing woman raised eight kids by herself.
They lived in a log cabin in one of Santaquin's fruit orchards. This determined mother even built some of the cabin with her own hands. I clearly felt the love and respect her children have for her. In fact at one point the meeting got emotional.
Rebecca spoke of her humble beginnings and said she was taught with patience and love. She also learned she could do anything, which has surely contributed to her success. Tomorrow's program will discuss more about this remarkable family and the important contribution they're making to the Daybreak community.
