LISBON, Nov 3 (AFP) - Colombian pop star Shakira won the Best Female act at the 12th annual MTV Europe Music Awards held Thursday in the Portuguese capital Lisbon.

"I can't believe this. I really didn't expect it, so I have no speech prepared. I really didn't expect it," the 28-year-old singer said as she received her award. "Thank you, you made my night."

Shakira, who will later this month launch her first English language album since the 13 million selling "Laundry Service", will also perform at the event which is watched by millions around the world.

She beat Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey and Missy Elliott for the award.

Winners were selected by music fans from across Europe and Africa who voted via MTV's website online, except for the category of best video which is selected by MTV Europe.
