A good relationship with your kids may help them better handle stress during adulthood. Hi, I'm Dr. Cindy Haines, host of HealthDay TV. In a new study that was presented at a meeting of the American Psychological Association, researchers surveyed 912 adults, who discussed their childhood relationships with their mother and father. For eight nights in a row, they also reported any stressful experiences they'd had earlier that day. The researchers found that people who had a better relationship with their mother during childhood had less daily psychological distress. People with poorer relationships with their mother or father, however, reported more stressors during the day, such as arguments, work deadlines, and traffic jams. In addition, among men, those who had a better relationship with their fathers during childhood were less likely to react emotionally to daily stressors. According to one of the researchers on the study, having parents who are caring and involved may give children the tools they need to manage relationships with other people during adulthood. IÕm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV, with the news that doctors are reading; health news that matters to you.
