Ever since a colleague was hit by a car along the side of the road, I've been more nervous about interviews on the highway. I wear my issued orange vest and stay close to the work crews behind the orange barrels, but you never know what drivers will do. So I was very grateful to UDOT spokesman Adan Carillo for helping me out yesterday for my assignment. I was assigned to do a story on the cleanup of some graffiti on the bridge from I-80 Eastbound to I-15 Northbound. To get good pictures and to get the interview, I would have to stop along the side of the road. I grabbed one picture, but Adan sent me more pictures of the efforts that he took for UDOT so I didn't have to linger too long. He also was very quick but complete in our interview. That way we were both able to quickly get out of the way of the crews and of traffic on that bridge. It really was an interesting story. The guys had to hover over the side of the bridge in their machine to clean it off. I have no idea how taggers don't die as they scrawl these things on bridges and signs. Adan told me UDOT spends $80,000 a year on graffiti removal in Salt Lake County. That's definitely money that could be spent in other ways.
