I've made some interesting observations as I've hosted this program. One of those observations involves basements. Yes, some of those subterranean household areas - commonly known for storing our belongings or being play areas for children - have also served as the original office for many a successful businesses.

Such is the case with Plattinum Engineering. David Platt started the company in his basement in 2005. He was the only employee at first but now his relocated Salt Lake City office houses a staff of five full-time and three part-time employees.

Prior to starting the company, David had years of experience working with architects and engineers; his father and two of his brothers are architects, so he essentially grew up in the industry. He was inspired to found his business following his 2002 graduation from the University of Utah and several successful internships with different engineering companies.

Plattinum Engineering provides engineering services for large-scale custom homes, especially high-end vacation homes and commercial buildings, as well as structural services for smaller residential homes. The company has well established relationships with many architects in Utah and Idaho and has completed projects in Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Texas and, most recently, Missouri. Plattinum Engineering also provides historic preservation work on older buildings in need of seismic upgrades.

David feels his extensive architectural and engineering experience has been quite a boon for his growing company. Plattinum Engineering is distinguished by David's skill in finding unique solutions to complicated problems. He is talented at thinking outside the box and his team includes several people who can think inside the box, which makes for a good blend of ideas. He plans to see his company continue growing as more people become aware of the variety of his offerings.
