A.Z. Tanner was the first physician to practice full-time in Layton. He worked out of his home until 1910 when he opened the Tanner Clinic. One of his children, Noall, who also went into medicine, joined three other area physicians to form the first grouping of doctors at Tanner Clinic. He wanted to create a facility that provided one-stop medical care for its patients. The idea was revolutionary for the time.

Today, the Tanners' legacy continues through Tanner Clinic, now home to 70 physicians of various specialties. This year the clinic is celebrating its 100th anniversary of providing quality medical care to Davis County residents. It remains one of the state's largest independent physician-owned medical facilities.

Marshall McKinnon, clinic administrator, says the Tanner Clinic features doctors practicing about 20 different medical specialties including dermatology, family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, urology and plastic surgery. Many patients are able to receive all their medical care at Tanner Clinic and are even third and fourth generation clientele.

One of the most significant changes for the clinic in recent years is a switch from paper to electronic health records. Marshall says the electronic files are more accessible to physicians providing care, at the same time they are far more secure than paper records. Through secure connections, physicians can access a patient's records from both the clinic and a hospital where the patient might have received emergency or surgical services. Among other features, Tanner Clinic boasts a certified laboratory and offers the latest digital imaging in CT, MRI, ultrasound, and X-rays.

Tanner Clinic's goal is to continue growing with northern Davis County. The clinic staff prides itself on focusing on its patients' needs and providing quality healthcare with compassion, courtesy and respect. As a result, Marshall is confident Tanner Clinic can continue carrying on the legacy A.Z. and Noall established 100 years ago.
