Press ReleaseCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Former Utah director of athletics Jim Copeland died on Friday at his home in Charlottesville at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. Copeland served as Utah's director of athletics from 1985-87 before leaving for a job at his alma mater, Virginia.
Copeland, a former three-year starter for the Cavaliers' football team, was the school's director of athletics from 1987-94. He also held the same position at William & Mary and SMU.
During his two years in Salt Lake City, the Utes captured three NCAA titles—two in skiing and one in gymnastics—and 11 conference titles.
Copeland was born in Charlottesville, where a funeral is planned for Tuesday.
