NEW YORK, Sep 19, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- British actor Simon Russell Beale has signed on to replace Tim Curry as King Arthur in the Broadway musical, "Monty Python's Spamalot."

Beale, who made his Broadway debut in the National Theatre's production of "Jumpers" last year, will take over the kingdom in the Tony Award-winning show starting Dec. 20, "Spamalot" producers said in a statement Monday.

Winner of the Olivier, Evening Standard and London Critic's Circle awards, among many other theatrical accolades, Beale is also an associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as the National and Almeida theatres.

Beale returned to the Donmar in London this past week in a limited engagement of Christopher Hampton's "The Philanthropist."

He is expected to begin rehearsals in New York this November for "Monty Python's Spamalot," which is directed by Mike Nichols and which has repeatedly set new box office records at the Shubert Theatre, since opening on March 17.
