PARIS, Sept 15 (AFP) - The Michelin guide, the French bible to European gastronomic dining and classy accommodation, is putting the final touches to its first-ever red edition of New York eateries and lodgings which will come out in November.
The book, covering some 500 restaurants and 50 hotels in the Big Apple, is "the reflection of a new generation of Michelin guides with more text and photos," said Emmanuel Penicaud, director of Michelin's Voyage unit which publishes the tyre-maker's series of maps and guides.
The company said in February that it would bring out the new New York red edition, which differs from an existing, more general green guide on the US city aimed purely at tourists.
It will sit alongside a series of 12 other editions covering 20 European countries whose prestige relies on anonymous tests by its inspectors. Paris and London red city guides are already available and will be updated this year.
As well as coming out in familiar book form, the new guides will also be available on Michelin's leisure website (viamichelin.fr), and for car GPS systems, personal digital assistants and mobile telephones, Penicaud said.
"All these forms and the needs of our clients are pushing us to change our guides," he said.
He added that while sales of the Michelin books were declining -- and currently stood at 800,000 to one million sold worldwide across the series -- the number of people consulting its multimedia offerings was increasing.
