(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) -- Iraqi officials say it was an accident.

They say U-S troops mistakenly opened fire on a car carrying a member of the Iraqi Governing Council in Baghdad. The council member wasn't hurt, but his driver was.

The council member (Mohammed Bahr al-Uloum) is a Shiite Muslim cleric. He was traveling inside a U-S-guarded compound when the incident happened.

Iraqi officials haven't said when it happened. They say a U-S officer on the scene expressed regret and apologized to the cleric.

U-S officials say they don't know anything about the incident.
