(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The A-C-L-U wants free speech restored on Main Street while they wait for a ruling on the land swap between the Mormon Church and Salt Lake City.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the court documents yesterday with the Denver-based 10th U-S Circuit Court of Appeals.
Federal appeals judges are deciding whether Salt Lake City violated the First Amendment when it turned over control of the Main Street Plaza to the church in exchange for church-owned land elsewhere in the city.
A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit but the A-C-L-U appealed the ruling claiming the judge focused on private property law without giving full consideration to First Amendment free-speech and religion provisions.
