the past few weeks, the Utah Transit Authority has conducted public hearings throughout Salt Lake County on a proposed overhaul of the system's bus routes.
The public responded impressively with thousands of comments that will help UTA adjust their proposal to more effectively serve the public's needs. With some strategic tweaking, bus service should improve significantly.
Now, UTA is seeking input on a proposal to increase what it charges to ride mass transit. A $1.50 fare for an adult bus ride could go to $2 in the next couple of years; a day pass on TRAX from $4 to $5!
Included in the new fare structure is the proposed rate for riding FrontRunner commuter rail, which will begin operating next year. $2.50 is the proposed base fare with 50 cents added for each additional station stop. To ride the entire route one-way would cost $5.50.
Obviously, the proposed increases will impact different riders in a variety of ways. That's why UTA needs to hear what the public has to say.
The first in a series of seven hearings will be held tomorrow in Brigham City with others scheduled thru April 11 in Davis, Weber, Tooele, Salt Lake and Utah counties. Now is the time for Utahns to let UTA know what they think about the changes.
