The Texas Rangers have agreed to terms on new contracts for right-handed pitchers Dane Dunning and Josh Sborz. The deals came ahead of Friday night's tender deadline. That leaves the Rangers with three players still eligible for salary arbitration. They are first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, switch-hitting catcher Jonah Heim and center fielder Leody Taveras. The Rangers tendered 2025 contract offers to all 27 eligible players on their big league roster. Dunning and Sborz avoided salary arbitration with the completion of their deals. Michigan State tight end Jack Velling was placed on a backboard and carted off the field Friday night in the first quarter against Purdue. Velling was injured  on an incomplete pass as the intended target after taking a hit from Boilermakers defensive back Dillon Thieneman. The junior from Seattle had one catch for 11 yards before he was hurt, giving him 31 receptions and 334 yards. Velling spent his first two seasons at Oregon State and was an AP All-Pac 12 tight end last year. When the Spartans hired Beavers coach Jonathan Smith nearly a year ago, Velling joined him.

The Philadelphia 76ers say center Joel Embiid is managing swelling in his left knee and will miss a second consecutive game Sunday. The Sixers issued a statement on the condition of the 2023 NBA MVP at halftime of Friday's NBA Cup game against the Brooklyn Nets, saying the decision to sideline Embiid was made along with the team's medical staff. Embiid was ruled out prior to Friday's game against the Nets due to what the team described as left knee injury maintenance. The Sixers host the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a sore throwing shoulder. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage but the shoulder didn't improve during the week and Purdy was ruled out for the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan said star defensive end Nick Bosa also will miss the game with injuries to his left hip and oblique. The commissioner's office says Moreno tested positive for Nandrolone, and Crisostomo tested positive for Boldenone and Nandrolone. A 26-year-old right-hander, Moreno was released by the New York Mets' Class A Brooklyn Cyclones on Tuesday. Alyssa Nakken, the first woman to coach in an MLB game, is leaving the San Francisco Giants to join the Cleveland Guardians. Nakken made history in 2022 when she took over as first-base coach following an ejection. A former college softball star at Sacramento State, Nakken joined the Giants in 2014 and was promoted to a spot on manager Gabe Kapler's staff in 2020, becoming the majors' first full-time female coach. Nakken has been hired as an assistant director within player development for the Guardians, who won the AL Central last season under first-year manager Stephen Vogt. Nakken, 34, will work with former Giants coaches Craig Albernaz and Kai Correa.

French soccer federation says it won't intervene in Mbappé vs. PSG dispute

The French Football Federation will not intervene in the dispute between Kylian Mbappé and his former club Paris Saint-Germain over unpaid wages. PSG asked the federation to look into the call by the French league appeals commission last month to uphold a decision ordering the club to pay Mbappé 55 million euros ($60 million). The federation says on Friday its legal department found "that the request for a federal evocation of the case submitted to it did not meet the required conditions." PSG did not immediately react to the announcement. The league legal commission ruled in favor of Mbappé but PSG insisted it did not owe him money and appealed. The parties were heard again on Oct. 15 and the verdict remained unchanged.

3 Nigerian tennis players suspended and fined for violating match-fixing rules

Three tennis players from Nigeria linked to a match-fixing syndicate in Belgium have been banned for more than two years and fined $10,000 apiece. The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the penalties Friday. Henry Atseye, 35, Sylvester Emmanuel, 26, and Christian Paul, 29, were accused of breaches of anti-corruption rules in 2017 and 2018. The trio joins at least 20 others who have been suspended for having links with a syndicate run by Grigor Sargsyan, who was previously given a five-year custodial sentence.

Browns' Newsome calls Steelers' Pickens "fake tough guy" after scuffle on last play of Cleveland win

An incompletion and the final whistle ended Thursday night's snow-covered game between the Steelers and Browns. The bad blood is still boiling. Pittsburgh wide receiver George Pickens had to be restrained from going after Cleveland cornerback Greg Newsome III after dragging him out of the back of the end zone on the last play by pulling hm by the helmet. As the Steelers attempted to complete a Hail Mary in a 24-19 loss, Pickens ran down field and didn't appear to go after Russell Wilson's pass while being boxed out by Newsome. Pickens yanked at Newsome's helmet and the pair wound up next to the restraining wall. Afterward, Newsome called Pickens a "fake tough guy."
