New York has the best record in the American League at 89-63 and leads second-place Baltimore by five games in the AL East with 10 to play. The latest victory ensured the Yankees at least a wild card. It's the 59th postseason appearance in franchise history, but the Yankees are still trying to end a World Series drought that dates to 2009, when New York celebrated its 27th title.

Ohtani, who began the day two shy of each mark, singled to lead off the game then swiped second. He flew out to left, struck out, lined out to right and struck out in his next four plate appearances. Tommy Edman hit his sixth homer in the last eight games for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who remained 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place San Diego. Enrique Hernández and Will Smith also went deep and Freddie Freeman had three hits for the Dodgers.

Justin Slaten (6-2) worked out off a first-and-third, no-out jam in the seventh for the win and Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for his 27th save in 31 chances. Ryan Pepiot struck out a career-high 12 in six innings for the Rays and Taylor Walls had an RBI single.

Marcell Ozuna homered, Gio Urshela drove in three runs and Spencer Schwellenbach pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night. The win allowed the Braves to stay within two games of the Mets for the final National League wild card spot. Ozuna greeted Tony Santillan with his 38th home run of the season in the seventh, a solo shot that broke a 1-1 tie. Scott hasn't pitched since July 21 due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow but hoped to return this month to the Mets, who entered Wednesday night two games ahead of Atlanta for the last National League playoff spot. The 25-year-old Scott began throwing off a mound late last month but said Wednesday he had a difficult time ramping up his off-speed pitches.

Reds starting pitcher Brandon Williamson says he has a full UCL tear that will require Tommy John surgery. The left-hander exited Tuesday night's game against Atlanta in the second inning with a strained elbow. He doubled over for a brief moment near the mound before being replaced. Williamson said Wednesday he had two MRIs to diagnose the tear. Williamson, a second-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft, hurt his shoulder in spring training. The 26-year-old made his first major league start of the season Sept. 1. It was the first of four starts this year.

Orioles designate reliever Craig Kimbrel for assignment

Craig Kimbrel's time with the Baltimore Orioles is over. The Orioles designated their former closer for assignment Wednesday following the latest in a series of poor outings. Kimbrel gave up six runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief in Baltimore's 10-0 home loss to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. Kimbrel has a 13.94 ERA in his last 11 appearances over the past month. The nine-time All-Star has amassed a whopping 440 saves and pitched in 837 games. But this season, his first with Baltimore, the right-hander has a 5.33 ERA with six blown saves.

Rogers Communications buys out Bell stake in Maple Leafs Sports for $3.5 billion

Rogers Communications Inc. is buying out Bell's 37.5% share of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment for $3.5 billion. The sale announced Wednesday would give Rogers 75% ownership of the sports conglomerate, whose holdings include the NHL's Maple Leafs, the NBA's Raptors, the CFL's Argonauts, the MLS Toronto soccer team and an AHL minor-league hockey team. Rogers also owns Sportsnet and Major League Baseball's Blue Jays. The sale is expected to close next year.

Replacing an ailing Francisco Lindor at shortstop, Acuña capped a huge night at the plate with his first career home run to help the Mets beat the Washington Nationals 10-1 on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Acuña, a younger sibling of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., finished a triple short of the cycle and scored three times in his fourth major league game. New York's victory coupled with Atlanta's 6-5 loss in Cincinnati left the Braves two games out of a playoff spot with 11 to play. The Mets and Diamondbacks are tied for the second of three National League wild cards at 83-68.
