American Outlaws supporters' group calls for Gregg Berhalter's ouster as US coach

The U.S. soccer team's largest supporters' group has called for coach Gregg Berhalter's ouster following the team's first-round elimination from the Copa America. The American Outlaws issued a statement two days after a 1-0 loss to Uruguay. The group says: "There needs to be accountability and a plan to move forward for the USMNT" and adds it's time to make a change in the head coaching position. Berhalter has led the team to seven wins, six losses and one draw since returning in September.

Toronto (7-12-3) in winless in eight consecutive games. Derrick Etienne Jr. scored from point-blank range to give Toronto a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Ojeda headed home an entry, played Iván Angulo, from the top of the 6-yard box to make it 1-1 in the 27th.

Giacomo Vrioni scored twice in the first half and the New England Revolution held on for a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United. Vrioni used defender DeJuan Jones' first assist of the season to find the net in the 11th minute and 19-year-old Noel Buck's first helper of the campaign in the 45th to give New England (7-11-1) a two-goal lead at halftime. The San Diego Wave are calling accusations made by a former employee on social media "inaccurate and defamatory." Brittany Alvarado, who says she is a former video and creative manager for the team, called on the National Women's Soccer League to remove team President Jill Ellis, the former coach of the U.S. women's national team. Alvarado cited a poor work environment that took a toll on her mental health in the lengthy post on the social platform X. The Wave responded with a statement Wednesday saying those allegations are untrue and said they were looking into possible legal avenues to address the matter.

Wrexham star striker Paul Mullin is set to miss the start of the new season after undergoing "minor spinal surgery." Mullin will also miss Wrexham's summer tour to the U.S. and Canada that will see the Welsh club, owned by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, play Bournemouth, Chelsea and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Wrexham said Wednesday the 29-year-old Mullin had surgery in London in the middle of June to correct a long-term lower-back and hamstring issue. Newly built CPKC Stadium of the KC Current to host NWSL championship game in November

The championship game of the National Women's Soccer League will be played Nov. 23 at CPKC Stadium. It is the home of the Kansas City Current and one of the first purpose-built stadiums for a professional women's team in the world. The league made the announcement Wednesday. The $120 million, privately funded facility opened earlier this year on the banks of the Missouri River, just north of downtown Kansas City. The Current have sold out every match so far this season at the 11,500-seat stadium. The Current play the Orlando Pride on Saturday night in a matchup of the NWSL's top two teams.

Nashville SC hires USMNT assistant coach B.J. Callaghan as its head coach

B.J. Callaghan is leaving his role as an assistant coach on the U.S. men's national soccer team to become head coach of Nashville SC. Callaghan will officially take over on July 22. Nashville SC fired Gary Smith after getting off to a 3-4-5 start this season. Callaghan had served as interim head coach of the U.S. team last summer and led the squad to the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League championship and the semifinals of the Gold Cup. A controversial gesture made by Turkey player Merih Demiral at soccer's European Championship has ignited a diplomatic brouhaha between the country and host nation Germany. Turkey has summoned the German ambassador to protest German interior minister Nancy Faeser's condemnation of Demiral's goal celebration the night before.
