The former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has pleaded not guilty as a formality in a sports betting case. Prosecutors allege Ippei Mizuhara stole nearly $17 million from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. He has agreed to a plea deal on one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a false tax return. But first he entered a not-guilty plea as a formality during his arraignment Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles. Authorities say there was no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara's gambling.

José Ramírez had a pair of two-run singles and reached base five times as the Cleveland Guardians beat Texas 7-0 on Monday night and sent the Rangers to their first four-game losing streak of the season. Five Cleveland pitchers combined for the four-hit shutout of the defending World Series champions. The AL Central-leading Guardians have won 14 of their last 24 games. Ramírez drove in two runs with singles in the eighth and ninth innings. He walked twice and also reached on a fielding error by Corey Seager in the first inning.

Lucky Mariners fan ends up with two foul balls on consecutive pitches

A lucky fan walked away with two souvenirs from the game in Seattle between the Mariners and Kansas City Royals. And they came on back-to-back pitches. During the bottom of the first inning, Seattle's Josh Rojas fouled consecutive pitches from Kansas City pitcher Brady Singer down the left field line. Both sliced into the stands and ended up in the hands of the same fan. The fan made a basket catch to grab the first foul ball on the fly. The second ball appeared to land at his feet before he picked it up off the ground.

Alex Bregman homered twice and had a season-high four RBIs to lead the Houston Astros to a 9-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. Bregman homered off Oakland starter Ross Stripling in the fourth inning, reminiscent of the homer he hit off Stripling in the 2018 All-Star Game. Bregman homered again in the seventh off Mitch Spence. Bregman later added a double in the eighth that scored Trey Cabbage and Jeremy Peña to put Houston up 7-2. The Astros have now won four of their last five, including a series win in Detroit. Oakland has lost four of five.

That left Toronto basically without any position players aside from those who started Monday night at Baltimore. Then the game went to extra innings, but the Blue Jays prevailed 3-2 in 10. Manager John Schneider said it's only May 13, but this was a huge win. Toronto went 3-10 against the Orioles last year. Even after this victory, the Blue Jays are in last place. But perhaps this was a turning point.

The Red Sox had won their last two games. Rays starter Zach Eflin gave up three runs on six hits in five innings. Their bullpen took over from there, with three relievers holding Boston to two singles.

Hoskins appeared to be wincing as he reached first base on his single to right. Hoskins eventually headed to the dugout as Blake Perkins pinch-ran for him. The 31-year-old Hoskins is hitting .233 with nine homers, 27 RBIs and an .814 OPS this year after missing the entire 2023 season with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament.

But it is 9-7 since that ugly beginning to the season. The White Sox acquired Leasure as part of their sell-off when they went 61-101 last year. He has been especially good of late. He has allowed one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings in four appearances this month.

Reds' TJ Friedl placed on injured list with fractured left thumb

Cincinnati Reds outfielder TJ Friedl, who had just returned from a fractured right wrist, has landed back on the injured list with a fractured left thumb. The Reds center fielder was hit by Kyle Harrison's first pitch of the game Sunday in San Francisco in just his sixth game returning from the wrist injury. Reds manager David Bell said Friedl will miss four to five weeks. The 28-year-old Friedl had 18 homers and 27 stolen bases in 138 games for Cincinnati in 2023.

The San Francisco Giants placed outfielder Jung Hoo Lee on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated left shoulder and are still awaiting word on the severity of the injury. Lee hurt his shoulder in the first inning on Sunday when it hit the right-center field wall as he leaped to try to make a catch. Lee underwent an MRI on Monday and was set to meet with team doctors later in the day to determine the next steps of his recovery. Manager Bob Melvin said he didn't anticipate that surgery will be needed.

Mets' Senga says he needs more time before beginning rehab stint

Kodai Senga, who has yet to pitch this season for the New York Mets due to a right shoulder capsule strain, will continue working on his mechanics before beginning a rehab assignment. Senga said his mechanics didn't feel right during his first live batting practice session April 29. Senga signed a five-year deal with the Mets in 2022 following an 11-year career in his native Japan. The 31-year-old finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year balloting after going 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts last season.

Right-hander José Cuas was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Alzolay is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA and has four saves in nine opportunities. Héctor Neris, who has six saves in seven chances, has moved into the closer's role though Alzolay earned the save in the Cubs' 5-4 win in 10 innings at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Neris was the winning pitcher. Alzolay becomes the eighth current Cubs player on the injured list.

Baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz has been honored by the New York Legislature for his prolific career and philanthropic work. Ortiz has long leveraged his celebrity status to raise funds for children in the Dominican Republic and New England who can't afford cardiac care. His work has also benefited some New York families, according to the resolution passed by lawmakers in the state Senate. A spokesperson for state Sen. Luis Sepúlveda, who brought forth the resolution, said "even though the senator is a die-hard Yankee fan, he acknowledges the great philanthropic work of Ortiz."

Roku secured multi-year rights for MLB Sunday Leadoff games beginning with the Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The telecasts will be produced in collaboration with local broadcast teams. Viewers without a Roku device can stream the games on the Roku Channel app, which is free and available on Amazon Fire devices, Samsung TVs and Google TVs. The Baltimore Orioles have recalled outfielder Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk. They optioned outfielder Heston Kjerstad to Norfolk. Baltimore also reinstated outfielder Austin Hays from the injured list and designated outfielder Ryan McKenna for assignment. Stowers was sent down after Baltimore's Mother's Day game last year. This year he found out on the holiday he was coming back to the majors. Kjerstad is one of four top-25 prospects in Baltimore's system, but finding room for them is a challenge for the Orioles, given the strength of their major league roster.

Major League Baseball debuted new statistical metrics on its Baseball Savant website on Monday, unveiling categories that measure some of the reasons that the game's best hitters are so darn good. Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is the king of swings as it relates to bat speed. The sweet spot of the slugger's bat barrel travels through the strike zone at an average of 80.6 miles per hour according to data, which is far ahead of Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz. Cruz is in second place at 77.7 mph. There are six new catgories and five of them focus on hitters, including average bat speed, fast swing rate, squared up rate, blasts and swing length.

After a rookie renaissance the past couple years, some top prospects have struggled this season

Just when it appeared baseball's young standouts had mastered the transition from Triple-A to the majors, a few of the game's prized prospects showed up and went through a humbling experience. Jackson Holliday of Baltimore, Colt Keith of Detroit and Wyatt Langford of Texas have had a rough time of it at the plate. So has Jackson Chourio of Milwaukee to some extent. This comes after last year's class of rookie hitters ranked among the best ever.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins were baseball's big overachievers in 2023. That hasn't carried over to this season so far. The Diamondbacks and Marlins both made the postseason last year despite negative run differentials. Arizona's was minus-15, and Miami's was a whopping minus-57. The Diamondbacks not only reached the playoffs but went all the way to the World Series. But right now Arizona is languishing under .500 and Miami has the worst record in baseball at 11-31.
