Christopher Morel hit his first career grand slam and Yan Gomes also connected for the Chicago Cubs, who beat Joe Musgrove and the San Diego Padres 5-1. Unlike on Monday, the Cubs held this lead. A night earlier, they blew an 8-0 lead and lost 9-8. Right-hander Ben Brown pitched well in his first big league start but not long enough to get the win. He was pulled after 4 2/3 scoreless innings and 77 pitches, with the bases empty. He allowed three hits while striking out five and walking one.
Trout hits 6th homer but Rays beat Angels 6-4 behind Caballero and Paredes

José Caballero had three hits and two RBIs, Isaac Paredes homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 despite Mike Trout's sixth home run. Harold Ramírez also drove in a pair for the Rays, who have won three of four. Aaron Civale allowed only two more hits after Trout's two-run shot in the first. The right-hander gave up three runs, two earned, in five innings with four strikeouts. Pete Fairbanks earned his first save despite giving up an RBI single to Luis Rengifo in the ninth. Trout has homered in three straight games for the 15th time in his career.

CJ Abrams homered and drove in three runs after missing three games with a bruised left pinkie and the Washington Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Tuesday night. Riley Adams added an RBI double and Jacob Young had two hits and three stolen bases as Washington won its sixth in a row against San Francisco. Patrick Bailey and Nick Ahmed drove in runs for the Giants, who lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. Jordan Weems (1-0) earned his sixth career win despite giving up two runs (one earned) in one inning. Kyle Finnegan pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his fourth save.

Shea Langeliers became only the second Athletics starting catcher to hit three home runs in a game _ and the first in 99 years. Langeliers' third home run of the night was a two-run drive in the ninth inning that lifted Oakland over the Texas Rangers 4-3. A 26-year-old who entered with 29 career big league homers, Langaliers hit solo drives in the second off Nathan Eovaldi and in the seventh against David Robertson. The only other starting catcher to homer three times in a game for the A's was Philadelphia's Mickey Cochrane on May 21, 1925.

Alex Verdugo has the New York Yankees barking. After the Yankees opened the season with a four-game sweep in Houston, the demonstrative outfielder described his new teammates as a bunch of "dawgs." To celebrate both of his homers, Verdugo's teammates have taken the compliment literally, barking loudly in the dugout like hungry canines. "I love it, I love it," Verdugo said after homering in a 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Anthony Rizzo & Co. are a big league-best 10-2.

The Baltimore Orioles have called up top prospect Jackson Holliday hours before their game at Boston. Holliday was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 amateur draft out of high school in Oklahoma and breezed through the minor leagues. He narrowly missed out on a spot on the Orioles' opening-day roster last month. The 20-year-old infielder hit .333 with two home runs and five doubles in 42 at-bats during a short stint with Triple-A Norfolk this season. Holliday is the game's top-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Realmuto bruised his neck when hit by a Zack Wheeler wild pitch in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 3-0 loss to St. Louis, and the three-time All-Star was removed from the game. Wheeler was pitching to Brendan Donovan when he bounced and 0-1 curveball, catching Realmuto on the right side of his neck, above the collarbone, and knocking off his mask. Philadelphia medical staff examined Realmuto before the 33-year-old walked off the field under his own power. Realmuto has started at catcher in nine of Philadelphia's first 11 games this season.

The Braves led 6-0 before Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer off Tyler Matzek in the eighth. The Mets scored twice in the ninth off closer Raisel Iglesias before he struck out Alonso with a runner on to end it. López earned the No. 5 spot in Atlanta's rotation after signing a $30 million, three-year contract. He had six strikeouts while allowing three hits and three walks. Acuña had two hits, including the first of the Braves' six straight singles to open a three-run third inning.

New York won its fourth straight and improved to a major league-best 10-2, equaling the starts of the Yankees in 1922, 1949 and 2003. Miami dropped to 1-11 for the first time since losing 11 in a row after an opening victory in 1998. The Marlins are the first team to lose 11 of its first 12 since Baltimore in 2010. Jake Bauers had two RBIs. Ross earned his first big league win since June 29, 2021, for Washington against Tampa Bay. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in 6 1/3 innings in his second start of the season. Ross had his second Tommy John surgery in June 2022. He finalized a $1.75 million, one-year contract with the Brewers in December.

Fletcher's shot to right-center off Scott Barlow broke a 5-5 tie. Chicago scored five runs in the first and got the big hit when it needed one. The White Sox had scored just 16 runs in their first 10 games and was off to its worst start since 1968. Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer for the Guardians, who had their winning streak stopped at five straight. While they got their second win, the White Sox lost second baseman Yoán Moncada, who went down with a groin injury in the second inning.

Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada had to be helped off the field with a groin injury in the second inning against the Guardians. Moncada was running to first base after hitting a grounder when he pulled up and collapsed short of the bag. Moncada laid in the infield dirt for a few minutes before being helped to his feet and was assisted to the dugout and clubhouse. After the game, White Sox manager Pedro Grifo said Moncada hurt his hip. Earlier, Grifol said Moncada had been dealing with a nagging hip/adductor injury the past few days. The White Sox are already without outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and slugger Eloy Jimenez due to injuries.

Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez was placed on the 15-day injured list because of elbow inflammation as manager Joe Espada said he d he hoped the pitcher will miss only a couple of starts. Valdez was scratched from his scheduled start in the series opener, returned to Houston and was diagnosed with inflammation on top of the elbow. Houston selected the contract of right-hander Wander Suero from Triple-A Sugar Land and recalled left-hander Parker Mushinski from the Space Cowboys. Houston optioned right-hander Blair Henley to Sugar Land and transferred right-hander Oliver Ortega to the 60-day injured list.

All-Star J.D. Martinez has been given a shot to address lower back tightness that has delayed his debut with the New York Mets. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says he spoke with Martinez, who has been working at the team's facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, after signing a $12 million, one-year contract on March 24. Mendoza says the 36-year-old Martinez experienced similar lower back soreness following spring training last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mendoza says the development with Martinez's back was "nothing too concerning" and added the decision was made "to take care of it right now."

Cowser had a pair of RBI doubles, the second driving in two runs in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. He added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to help the Orioles stop a two-game skid. Burnes struck out six and walked two, giving up Tyler O'Neill's sixth homer of the season in the first inning. O'Neill began the season by homering for his fifth straight opening day, a major league record.

Pirates two-time All-Star closer David Bednar is off to a rough start. Bednar blew his third save in four opportunities this season in a 5-3 loss to Detroit. The 29-year-old Bednar, a Pittsburgh native, was booed after letting a two-run lead slip away. Pirates first baseman chastised the fans for their behavior, calling it "unacceptable." Bednar says control issues are his biggest problem at the moment. He added he plans to get with the coaching staff to figure out what the issue is. Even with Bednar struggling, the Pirates are off to a 9-3 start heading into a four-game series at Philadelphia.

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-hander Michael Tonkin from the New York Mets to aid their injury-depleted bullpen. The cash deal reunites the 34-year-old with his original major league team. The Twins placed right fielder Max Kepler on the 10-day injured list to make room on the 26-man roster. Kepler bruised his right knee when he fouled off a ball in the season opener on March 28. He has one hit in 20 at-bats with one walk. Tonkin was designated for assignment by the Mets last week. He was drafted by the Twins in 2008 and made his debut in 2013.
Red Sox honor 2004 championship team, Tim Wakefield's family ahead of home opener

Boston honored its 2004 World Series championship team before the game as part of its opening day festivities, with more than 40 members present from the team that ended the franchise's 86-year drought. The most noticeable absence was pitcher Tim Wakefield, who died of brain cancer in October at age 57. That was followed by the passing of his wife, Stacy, who died less than five months later after her own cancer battle. A tribute video was played for both, along with one of the 2004 run. Their children, Trevor and Brianna, led the members of the '04 team onto the field for the ceremony while carrying the World Series trophy. Brianna then threw out the first pitch.

Washington Nationals opening day starter Josiah Gray has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow and forearm problem. He is one of a series of pitchers hurt around the majors early this season. He was replaced on the roster by Joan Adon, who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester so he could start Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Gray is a right-hander who was an NL All-Star last season. He is 0-2 with a 14.04 ERA so far in 2024. The IL move is retroactive to Saturday.

New York Mets right-hander Julio Teheran has been designated for assignment, one day after he lasted only 2 2/3 innings in his debut with the team. The Mets selected the contract of right-hander Dedniel Núñez from Triple-A Syracuse before Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. The 33-year-old Teheran gave up four runs in Monday night's 8-7 win over the Braves. Teheran signed with New York on Friday. He began his career with Atlanta in 2011 and was an All-Star with the Braves in 2014 and 2016. Teheran spent spring training with the Baltimore Orioles.

Boston shortstop Story needs season-ending shoulder surgery; pitcher Nick Pivetta has injured elbow

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story will have what is likely season-ending surgery on his dislocated left shoulder and right-hander Nick Pivetta has a strained a right flexor, the latest in a spate of elbow injuries among pitchers. Story, a two-time All-Star, was placed on the 10-day injured list after dislocating his left shoulder Friday at the Los Angeles Angels. Projected recovery time is six months. Pivetta was placed on the 15-day IL, a move retroactive to Saturday. Story's injury occurred when hit the ground hard while making a backhand stop on Mike Trout's single in the fourth inning.

MLB and its history are dotted with men who played out of their natural handedness, a phenomenon that is seen occasionally in other sports but is a regular occurrence on the diamond. Thumb through a pack of baseball cards from just about any era and you're likely to see players who bat one way and throw the other. Ask them to sign that card and there's no telling which hand would hold the pen.
