SALT LAKE CITY — Tony Finau is still in position to win his first major championship on the PGA Tour.

But he'll have work to do after making the cut.

Finau carded an even-par 71 in Friday’s second round of the British Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus, Scotland. His two-day total of 138 is tied for sixth overall — but just two strokes off leaders Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner after a second round that was up-and-down through 18 holes

After a birdie on the par-4 second hole following his strong start, Finau took a 1-under 35 into the back nine Friday. He gave it back early with a bogey at No. 10, but pulled even to 1-under until a bogey on the par-4 No. 18 held him to even par on a day when plenty of golfers shot in the 70s.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Americans Pat Perez and Xander Schauffele are tied for third with a two-day 137 — just one stroke ahead of a sixth-place group that includes Finau, Rory McIlroy, Erik van Rooyen, Matt Kuchar and Zander Lombard.

Among the notables who survived the cut line are Jordan Spieth (T11), reigning U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka (T18), and Tiger Woods, who rode a sore neck strengthened by local company KT Tape to back-to-back 71s and a 29th-place spot on the leaderboard.
