SAN DIEGO (AP) — The University of San Diego placed basketball coach Lamont Smith on indefinite administrative leave Monday, a day after he was arrested in Oakland on suspicion of domestic violence.

The school said in a statement that it made the move because of the "serious nature of the charges."

Assistant coach Sam Scholl has been appointed acting coach for the postseason.

Sixth-seeded USD (18-12) faces third-seeded BYU in the West Coast Conference tournament on Saturday.

Smith was arrested at Oakland International Airport as the team was preparing to fly back to San Diego after a victory at the University of San Francisco on Saturday night.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, assault with force likely to commit great bodily injury and false imprisonment.

The allegations stem from a disturbance that was reported early Sunday. Officers spoke to a woman who said Smith assaulted her, several television stations reported. She told officers they were intimately involved, according to reports.

Smith is married with two children.

Smith didn't immediately return a text message and a call from The Associated Press.
