TAYLORSVILLE — The Hillcrest Huskies took care of business Tuesday, defeating the visiting Clearfield Falcons 62-47 in the opening round of the 6A girls basketball state tournament.

Clearfield kept it close for much of the game, but a dominant third-quarter performance by Hillcrest kept the Falcons from overcoming a once 15-point deficit.

Clearfield’s Haylie Anderson made a great run in the second half to cut Hillcrest’s lead to 5 before fouling out of the game with 1:30 left. Anderson scored 12 of her 24 total points and four of her six steals in the latter half of the game and was the catalyst to the Falcons’ only chance of keeping the game close.

The Falcons had several opportunities to cut into Hillcrest’s lead but missed several layups and other close baskets. Once Anderson was out of the game, there was not much more the Falcons could do.

Hillcrest used a balanced attack to keep the Falcons from claiming an upset, with Cara Snowder going to work in the post scoring a team-high 25 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. She was joined by Hope Higgs and Taylee Allen who combined for an additional 22 points. Taylee Allen also added 10 rebounds in the win.

The Huskies used a full-court press for the majority of the game, which kept Clearfield from getting into its sets and gaining momentum.

Hillcrest advances to the 6A quarterfinals and will play the winner of Westlake and Herriman on Thursday at 5:50 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College.
