PROVO — Alexander Mattison ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Boise State used a 17-0 second quarter to hand BYU their fifth-straight loss, 24-7 Friday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
BYU lost its fifth-straight game for the first time since 1970, when legendary coach LaVell Edwards was a BYU assistant.
Brett Rypien completed 12-of-19 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and an interception for Boise State (3-2).
BYU (1-5) took the first big play of the game, when Grant Jones picked off Boise quarterback Brett Rypien on the Broncos’ opening drive. Mangum completed his first four passes, then dumped the ball to Ula Toluta’u for a 3-yard TD romp to give BYU a 7-0 lead with 7:08 left in the opening quarter.
But the Broncos used a 21-0 second quarter to take control of the game. Boise State rolled up 151 yards of offense after the first period, and took a 17-7 lead at halftime when Rypien hit Sean Modster over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown with 36 seconds on the clock.
Even with the return of starting quarterback Tanner Mangum, BYU entered the fourth quarter with fewer than 100 passing yards and finished with fewer than 200 yards passing for the 12th-straight game against an FBS opponent. For the fifth time in six games, the Cougars did not score in the third quarter and produced just 44 yards of offense in 15 minutes after the break.
Mattison plowed into the end zone in the first minute of the fourth quarter with 2-yard rush to give the Broncos a 24-7 lead and all the room they needed.
Mangum completed 18-of-33 passes for 164 yards and two interceptions in his first game since Sept. 9. True freshman Joe Critchlow finished the game at quarterback for the Cougars.
