KAMAS — South Summit and Beaver aren’t regional rivals in the purest sense of the word.
But the two Class 2A schools have built up a rivalry on the most important item on any high school football team’s list: a championship.
Friday night’s KSL Game of the Week didn’t have a 2A title on the line. But don’t tell that to the Wildcats, who held the Beavers to one touchdown in a 30-7 win in Kamas.
“I think it means a lot to us,” said South Summit quarterback Kael Atkinson, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. “But it’s just one step closer to our ultimate goal, which is a state championship.”
The two schools met in back-to-back 2A state championship games in 2015 and 2016, which Beaver won both times.
The Wildcats were looking for payback on their home field.
After a scoreless first quarter, South Summit (4-0) got rolling with a 37-yard scoring run by Atkinson. Parker Grajek then hauled in a pass from Atkinson for a 43-yard touchdown, but Beaver (3-1) pulled within 14-7 at halftime with a 70-yard TD strike from Porter Hollingshead to Rhett Jordan.
That would be the end of it.
Both teams were held off the board in the third, but the Wildcats ended the game on a 16-0 run, capped by Jared Dansie’s 16-yard TD scamper to clinch the win.
“We’ve just got to keep going, keep working,” Dansie said. “Our ultimate goal is a state championship.”
Skyridge 21, Viewmont 17
At Viewmont, Ma’a Notoa ran for three touchdowns and the Falcons held on for the road win over the Vikings.
Notoa’s third TD run, a 15-yard scamper in the third quarter, gave Skyridge a 21-7 lead.
But the Vikings ended the game on a 10-0 run, including a 61-yard TD strike from Davis Weir to Lucas Bushey, before running out of time.
Kearns 35, Olympus 21
At Olympus, Isaac Matua and Sese Felila each ran for two touchdowns to help the Cougars rally past the Titans.
Harrison Creer’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Noah Bennee capped an 18-point second quarter and gave the Titans a 21-14 halftime lead.
But it was all they could do as Kearns scored 21 unanswered points to improve to 4-0.
