SALT LAKE CITY — Utah capped its third week of spring football Friday with its first full scrimmage at Rice-Eccles Stadium, ready to show off a shiny new offense and a high-octane system.

It didn’t go quite up to par, though.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham said the new offense is about 70 percent installed, and quarterback Troy Williams and the first-team offense stalled regularly after a 10-yard touchdown run on fourth down.

The play of the day came when transfer Cooper Bateman tossed a 48-yard touchdown to Samson Nacua.

Yes, the Utes’ offense is still a work in progress — and so is the decision on a starting quarterback.

“Cooper Bateman got a lot of reps today, and that was by design,” Whittingham said. “I thought all three of them did well.”

Former Layton High standout Julian Blackmon pulled down an interception to lead the defense.
