OREM — Tyson Humphreys, Terrell Barraclough, Tanner Benedict and Austin Clem each won an individual title to help Layton finish off its first state championship since 2000 to a 36-point win Thursday night over six-time defending champion Pleasant Grove at Utah Valley University.

“These kids have been wrestling for me since I started coaching at Layton," Lancers coach John Fager said. "This senior group was the first group of 6-7 year olds when I started at Layton. It’s been a long time with my brother and Neil Porter and all the other coaches who have been with us for a long time.

"The amount of time coaches put into the kids makes or breaks a program. If kids see coaches who are willing to sacrifice for them, they will be willing to sacrifice to reach their goals.”

Humphreys, Barraclough and Benedict won three-straight titles at 113, 120 and 126 pounds, respectively, to widen an impressive gap built on the first day of the tournament and help the Lancers cruise to victory.

By the time Clem came along and won a 4-3 decision over American Fork’s Jacob Rhoton at 182 pounds, the drama in the team race had been decided.

Maika Tauteoli (195) and Brandon Closson (220) each won an individual title to pace second-place Pleasant Grove, which pulled away from third-place Fremont, 223 ½ to 175. Mountain Crest (161) was fourth, followed by American Fork (127 ½).

Fremont’s Brayden Clark (106), Viewmont’s Shion Abe (132), Riverton’s Dylan Gregerson (138), Herriman’s Logan Jensen (145), Brighton’s Brayden Stevens (152), Mountain Crest’s Roy Bingham (160), Bingham’s Cole Moody (170) and Weber’s Brady Briskey (285) also won individual championships.
