WEST VALLEY CITY — Fort Wayne used a three-goal spurt in the third period to push the Utah Grizzlies to the brink of playoff elimination with a 3-1 win Wednesday at the Maverik Center.

Jon Puskar gave Utah a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, and the Grizzlies held that lead for nearly 50 minutes.

“You have to take it one game at a time,” Grizzlies head coach Tim Branham said in a statement. “We’ll take advantage of our day off tomorrow; refocus and make sure we come out with a lot of energy on Friday.”

But the Komets opened the third with a goal just 1:50 into the period, then took their first lead of the game three minutes left on the power play.

After the Grizzlies failed to convert on the power play in the final three minutes, Fort Wayne added a goal with 1:30 left to complete the scoring.

The series resumes Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Maverik Center. If the Grizzlies win, a fifth game will play at 7:30 p.m. MT Saturday in West Valley City. The final two games will be played, if necessary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
