SALT LAKE CITY — Jeff Hornacek has agreed in principle to become the new head coach of the Phoenix Suns for the next three years.

Hornacek has spent the past two seasons as an assistant for Tyrone Corbin and the Jazz and spent time as a shooting coach before that under Jerry Sloan starting in 2007.

The 50-year-old coach was being courted by a few teams. The Suns, 76ers and Bobcats had all spoken to him, but the Suns spent time over Saturday night to make sure they had a deal.

Hornacek spent his first six seasons playing for the Suns and made one All-Star game in 1991-92 when he averaged 20.1 points per game. He was traded to Philadelphia after that season for Charles Barkley.

He was traded to the Jazz in 1994 and helped spur them to two Finals runs with Karl Malone and John Stockton as the outside shot to keep defenses honest.

He will replace Lindsey Hunter who was serving as the interim coach after Alvin Gentry was fired mid-season.

The Suns had their second-worst season in franchise history last year at 25-57, they went 16-66 in their inaugural season.
