LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Third Quarter: James Lark looking very sharp still, eclipsing 300 yards throing and adding another touchdown to Cody Hoffman.
Make no mistake, though, Hoffman is making Lark look awesome. Hoffman has 3 touchdown catches on the day and has become, as he has for other BYU QBs, the go-to guy.
BYU gave up a circus/lucky catch for another score for the Aggies but lead at the end of the third 30-14 and are threatening to score again, and again. When you are playing your 3rd string QB, do you feel like you have to pull him if its too much of a blowout?
Who goes in next?
Second Quarter: Going into the half, the Cougars and their fans can breathe a little more easily as New Mexico State scored first but quickly remembered that they are New Mexico State and proceeded to give up huge chunks of yards that everyone expected. James Lark is your first half MVP with a very sharp 21/25 passing for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns.
He has been extremely accurate and calm while finding Cody Hoffman twice and JD Falslev once for scores to put BYU up 20-7 at the break. The Cougar defense has also arrived in Las Cruces finally making some stops so that Lark could get back on the field to score some points. The only drawback, other than the slow start, has been the lack of running game.
Jamaal Williams has been stagnant and the Aggies (who are awful in rushing defense) have kept the Cougar running game under wraps. Expect Williams to still break the 100 mark on the game, but this is the kind of day that he needs to break 200.
First Quarter: BYU has come into Las Cruces as a multiple touchdown favorite against New Mexico State but they sure weren't playing like it in the first quarter. James Lark gets the start in place of Riley Nelson and was a perfect 7-7 passing in the first frame but didn't produce a score.
Instead, the Cougars were flat on defense and at the end of the first frame, BYU gave up more yards than they produced and the Aggies are knocking on the door for a possible score inside the Cougar redzone.
