UNDATED (AP) — As the National Guard and law enforcement officers stood guard near the White House, surveillance planes kept watch on protesters in the nation’s capital from the air. At one point Wednesday night in Washington, an FBI plane, an Army surveillance plane and a Park Police helicopter were circling overhead. The demonstrators broke up into two groups; one stayed at the White House, the other marched to the Capitol. There were no indications of any confrontations with law enforcement. Hundreds of protesters stood face to face with military and federal officers who had formed a perimeter around Lafayette Park. The demonstration was held to protest the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minnesota.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California authorities have charged more than 100 people with looting, assault and other crimes committed during and around protests. More than 3,000 people have been arrested in Los Angeles County since protests began last week. The county produced the lion’s share of those charged with 61. Sacramento County has brought charges against 43 people and Orange County brought felony cases against two men. Thousands hit the streets in Los Angeles, San Francisco and smaller cities Wednesday but the demonstrations were peaceful. Business break-ins and theft has been greatly reduced since the weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A full autopsy of George Floyd, the handcuffed black man who died after being restrained by Minneapolis police, has been released and provides several clinical details, including that Floyd had previously tested positive for COVID-19. The 20-page report released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office came after the coroner’s office released summary findings Monday that Floyd had a heart attack while being restrained by officers, and classified his May 25 death as a homicide. Bystander video showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck, ignoring Floyd’s pleas until he eventually stopped moving, has sparked nationwide protests. The report also said Floyd’s lungs appeared healthy but he had some narrowing of arteries in the heart.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Cristobal has made landfall on Mexico’s Gulf coast state of Campeche, dumping heavy rain on the already soaked region. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Wednesday the storm had sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was expected to turn north later in the week, cross the Gulf of Mexico and eventually threaten the United States. But until then, forecasters expect Cristobal to meander along Mexico’s Gulf coast causing severe flooding. The hurricane center said it made landfall Wednesday morning near Atasta, just west of the major oil production town of Ciudad del Carmen.

RIDGECREST, Calif. (AP) — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has jolted the region of California desert where a powerful quake last summer was followed by thousands of aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey says Wednesday’s quake hit at a fairly shallow depth around 6:30 p.m. and was centered just north of the small city of Ridgecrest. A dispatcher with the city's police department said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury. The quake was felt as a bump and rolling motion in a high-rise building in downtown Las Vegas. Local television news broadcasts stopped as anchors reported seeing lights sway in their studios. It also shook buildings in downtown Los Angeles.
