WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats have wrapped up a day of arguments in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, appealing to skeptical Republican senators to join them in voting to oust Trump from office to “protect our democracy.” Trump's lawyers are sitting by, waiting their turn. The president is blasting the proceedings, threatening jokingly to face off with the Democrats by coming to “sit right in the front row and stare at their corrupt faces.” The challenge before the House managers is clear: Democrats have 24 hours over three days to prosecute the charges against Trump, trying to win over not just fidgety senators but the American public.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A black South Carolina elected official who considers herself a conservative Democrat is switching her allegiance from Joe Biden to Bernie Sanders in the state's first-in-the-South presidential primary. Dalhi Myers told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she had viewed the former vice president as “a compromise choice.” Myers said she was switching her allegiance in part because she values what she sees as Sanders' strength in being able to go toe-to-toe with President Donald Trump in the general election. Biden has deep support in the state, especially among African American voters.

SEATTLE (AP) — Police say multiple people opened fire in the busiest part of downtown Seattle during the Wednesday evening commute, killing one person and wounding seven others. Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said authorities began receiving calls about multiple gunshot victims at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. He says one person was found dead and that five others were taken to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center by fire and medical personnel. Fire officials and a hospital spokeswoman said later Wednesday that a total of seven people were being treated there for gunshot wounds. Police Chief Carmen Best says based on video from the scene, multiple shooters were involved and that shots rang out after a dispute. No arrests have been made.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a warrant has been issued for the arrest of NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown following accusations that he and his trainer attacked another man near Brown's Florida home. Hollywood police say Brown faces charges of burglary with battery, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief. Officers say they responded Tuesday afternoon to a disturbance call, where the alleged victim said Brown and his trainer, Glen Holt, hit him. Holt was arrested a short time later and charged with one count of burglary with battery. Police say officers attempted to make contact with Brown but were unsuccessful.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media say the city of Wuhan is shutting down outbound flights and trains as the country battles the spread of a new virus that has sickened hundreds of people and killed 17. The official Xinhua News Agency said Thursday that the city also asked people not to leave the city without specific reasons. The illness comes from a new coronavirus that experts say may be mutating. The World Health Organization put off deciding whether to declare the outbreak a global health emergency, asking its expert committee to continue its meeting for a second day.
