SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Part of a large Utah lake previously fouled by toxic algae is now closed to swimming due to E. coli bacteria contamination.
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality issued an advisory Thursday telling people to stay out of the water at the north end of Utah Lake, including the area around Lindon Marina.
Department spokeswoman Donna Kemp Spangler says E. coli indicates fecal contamination. It can cause urinary tract infections and diarrhea in humans.
The advisory says people should wash their hands after touching the water or handling fish from the lake, which is near Orem and Provo.
Spangler says tests didn't find high pollution levels at other parts of the lake.
Utah Lake was closed July 15 due to toxic algae, and researchers began studying whether nutrient levels contributed to the bloom. Most of the lake reopened to swimming and water sports by Aug. 2.
