SALT LAKE CITY — We know it wasn't going to be Bronco Mendenhall, but Colorado's new coach is familiar to BYU football fans.

The Buffaloes have hired San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre to save this fledgling program and bring it back to respectability.

MacIntyre is tasked with turning around a program that's suffered through seven straight losing seasons, including a 1-11 record this year, the worst in the 123-year history of the program.

MacIntyre turned around a a San Jose State program that was going nowhere fast. The Spartans (10-2) are ranked No. 25 in the BCS and are heading to the Dec. 27 Military Bowl in Washington, D.C., two years after a 1-12 showing in his first season.

And it looks like disgraced former Arkansas and Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino is back. He was hired Monday as the new top man at Western Kentucky.

The 51-year-old Petrino replaces Willie Taggart, who left WKU Saturday to become South Florida's coach. Petrino had a 34-17 record at Arkansas and 75-26 overall in eight seasons as a college head coach.

He was fired by Arkansas in April for a "pattern of misleading" behavior following a motorcycle accident. Petrino had an affair with former Razorback volleyball player Jessica Dorrell, who he later hired as a football assistant had gave her $20,000 in gifts. Petrino said initially he was the only person on the motorcycle but later admitted to Dorrell's presence.

Worst free throw ever?

It really just might be.

Appalachian State reserve center Brian Okam was at the charity stripe in a game against Western Carolina when he airballed the free throw.

Yes, that's happened before, but this shot traveled about four feet and landed in the arms of a teammate.

The free throw line is 15 feet from the basket.

Pretty sure this is not how Okam, who averages two points and two rebounds per game, wanted to get on the highlight reel.

Slippery when wet

A pretty entertaining Sunday Night Football game on NBC (no controversial Bob Costas editorials this time) between the Packers and Lions featured a play that you would expect to see in a snow storm on the "Frozen Tundra" that is Lambeau Field.

Detroit's Matthew Stafford dropped back for a pass, but as he brought up the ball to throw it slipped out of his hands and squirted away from him. The Packers' Mike Daniels scooped up the frozen football and ran it in for a score.

Daniels' "Lambeau Leap" left a little to be desired, but give the fans an assist.
