Utah Turkey Hunt an Unforgettable First for Special Needs Kids

Save Story

Estimated read time: 2-3 minutes

A spring turkey hunt in turned into a day that will be remembered for years, as four special needs youth experienced the thrill of their very first hunt, and each harvested a bird before the day was over.

Join us as we follow four kids while they hunt wild turkeys from ground blinds set among Utah's wide-open meadows and rugged canyon country. With careful planning, patient mentors and supportive families nearby, the youth were given the opportunity to safely experience every step of a traditional spring turkey hunt. For all four participants, it was their first time in pursuit of a gobbler.

By the end of the day, the group had accomplished something we've never had happen. Each kid harvested a turkey, which means 4 birds in one day! This is the most successful single hunt in the history of KSL Outdoors. But beyond the record, the smiles, confidence, and excitement on the kids' faces spoke volumes about the true success of the experience.

The hunt was made possible by Kids with Disabilities Adventures (KWD Adventures), a Utah-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of disabled and special needs youth through outdoor recreation. KWD Adventures creates opportunities for kids to enjoy hunting, fishing, and time outdoors. These experiences can be difficult for working families to access without additional support and planning.

For the kids involved, the hunt was about more than harvesting a turkey. It was about overcoming challenges, learning new skills, building confidence, feeling included, and being loved. For the volunteers and families, it was a powerful reminder of the impact the outdoors can have when opportunity meets compassion.

This is a story that proves hunting isn't just about the harvest. Hunting is also about creating meaningful moments and memories that last a lifetime.
