UNDATED (AP) — Ukraine's acting president says he's ordered the armed forces on full readiness because of the threat of "potential aggression" after Russian troops and pro-Russian units took up positions in Crimea. He also says security has been stepped up at power plants, airports and other key places. The U.N. Security Council has just wrapped up a meeting on the crisis.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is calling on Russia to de-escalate tensions in Ukraine by pulling its forces back to bases in the country's Crimean peninsula and to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine. The White House says Obama delivered that message to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a 90-minute telephone call this afternoon.
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state media outlets are saying that 28 people are dead and 113 injured after knife-wielding assailants attacked people at a train station in southwestern China. Five assailants were shot to death by police. Authorities in China consider it to be an organized, premeditated terrorist attack. The country's top police official is reportedly on route to the scene.
DUBLIN (AP) — Authorities say Ireland's most notorious crime boss is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in a Dublin ambush. John Gilligan has been at risk of assassination by rivals since his 2013 parole from prison after serving time on drug trafficking charges. Gilligan is widely blamed for the death of a reporter who was killed in 1996 by members of his gang but he was acquitted of the crime.
LUMBERTON, Miss. (AP) — The man who integrated the University of Mississippi in 1962 says the recent desecration of a statue of him should not deter black students from attending Ole Miss. James Meredith says it was "foolish" for anyone to leave a noose and an old Georgia state flag with a Confederate emblem on the statue. The items were found Feb. 16 on the Oxford campus.
