ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — A storm and a massive rainfall have flooded a city library and dozens of houses in a historic town along Croatia's Adriatic coast, with surging waters crumbling walls and stone streets and leaving many without electricity.

Emergency services said Thursday they received more than 500 calls during the storm that hit the central town of Sibenik late Wednesday and early Thursday.

Authorities say the rain has destroyed books and other objects at the Sibenik city library and firefighters have been struggling to pump out water from a basement gallery.

At the old city center in the town of 46,000, rushing waters pulled out street stones, rolling them over and over before scattering them in lower parts of the town. Authorities have urged residents to boil any water before drinking it.
