RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Eleven finalists from schools across Virginia are facing off in a competition aimed at encouraging students to explore great poetry.

They'll compete for the state title Friday in the 10th annual Poetry Out Loud program.

This year, more than 10,800 students and 50 schools participated in the competition. The finalists represent public and private schools, including homeschools.

Students are from Fredericksburg, Haysi, Richmond's St. Catherine's, Washington-Lee High School and Western Albemarle High School.

The state champion will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a $500 stipend for their school to purchase poetry books. The national finals are April 28-29, with more than $50,000 in cash and school stipends up for grabs.
