CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A fast-moving grass fire that started at a landfill has forced hundreds of people to evacuate from a rural area near Evansville, Wyoming.
No injuries were reported but at least 10 homes and several outbuildings were damaged or destroyed.
Winds topping 50 mph Sunday afternoon pushed the fire onto grassland from a composting area at a landfill about a mile from Evansville. The fire was 50 percent contained by Monday morning.
Police were letting evacuees return under escort to check on livestock and other animals. An evacuation center was set up at Casper College.
Natrona County Fire Marshall Bob Fawcett said the flames spread into a thinly populated area and a rural subdivision.
Fawcett estimated the fire burned several thousand acres.
