RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Tuition is going up this fall for students at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1TCWZhJ ) that VCU's governing board voted Friday to approve a 2.8 percent hike in tuition and fees next academic year. That means an increase of nearly $360 for in-state undergraduates.

With room and board, in-state students will pay nearly $700 more next academic year.

The tuition hike is the smallest the school has seen in at least a dozen years. But some students protested the increase and called for a tuition freeze.

VCU is also increasing university-funded financial aid by $5.6 million.

The board also approved an $87.3 million new academic building for the medical campus. The building will consolidate 11 existing departments and house a new health-related sciences major.
