LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A Utah woman drew a rare elk hunting permit, but she still spent four days in jail with her family for illegally shooting an elk.
The Herald Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1Nirveq ) that a conservation officer says Jennifer Goring and her family had strayed far outside the permitted unit when they shot a trophy bull elk in September 2014.
Division of Wildlife Resources officer Rustin Nielsen says it was Goring's son Kasse Alex who actually shot the elk.
Alex was 18 at the time. He reportedly said his parents and grandfather encouraged him to shoot.
Nielsen says the family left most of the elk to rot and denied everything when initially confronted.
All four family members pleaded guilty to misdemeanors in Rich County in November. They are required to pay restitution, fines and complete community service.
