SEATTLE (AP) — U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will be the featured speaker at the University of Washington's commencement ceremony.

Jewell is a 1978 graduate of the UW and was once a member of the university's Board of Regents. She was nominated to her post in 2013 by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate after her times as president and CEO of outdoor retailer REI.

In her current position, Jewell oversees about 20 percent of the country's lands including national parks, wildlife refuges and more. Among other duties, she also supervises "responsible development" of energy supplies on public lands and waters, according to a news release.

The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Husky Stadium.
