SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — County officials say about 80 tons (72.6 metric tons) of belongings, litter and debris were cleared from a longtime homeless encampment near the Utah state Capitol that authorities declared a health and fire hazard.
The Deseret News reports that camping gear, drug paraphernalia, blankets, furniture, car parts, shopping carts and even a residential light post were among items hauled away Thursday from the Salt Lake City foothills site.
Fourteen supervised Salt Lake County jail inmates helped clear about 15 campsites with up to four tents each that Salt Lake County Health Department spokesman Nicholas Rupp said remained after weeks of warnings.
Dale Keller, another county health official, estimated that 150 tons (136 metric tons) of debris was hauled away in a separate cleanup on the hillside in April.
