WASHINGTON (AP) — The Smithsonian Associates education program is opening its 50th year with new initiatives focused on the news and art history and speakers including Supreme Court justices and actor Martin Sheen.
This week the program is launching a new series called Smithsonian Newsflash to look behind the headlines to provide context on breaking news. The first session Thursday focuses on Cuba with American University Professor William LeoGrande as a featured speaker.
The Smithsonian Associates also is launching a certificate program in world art history. Participants can choose courses in art and architecture to learn from Washington's museums.
In February, the program's speaker series will feature Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia. Later Sheen will discuss his role as President Josiah Bartlet on TV's "The West Wing."
