AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Authorities are searching for an inmate with a history of violence and mental illness who escaped from an Austin hospital where he had been taken for a medical appointment.

The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://atxne.ws/25pX6Gu ) 55-year-old John Michael Wilkinson escaped from his appointment at Seton Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Wilkinson had been confined to the Austin State Hospital after having been found incompetent to stand trial following his 2015 arrest on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, resisting arrest and harassment.

Months before his escape, the Travis County district attorney's office had argued that Wilkinson needed to be in a maximum security mental health facility.

According to an arrest warrant, he was last seen wearing a gray zip-up jacket, a gray shirt, light blue jeans and brown shoes.
