WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Several patients and an employee at a Worcester hospital were recently treated for the skin condition scabies.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Mental Health says two units at the state-run Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital were affected.
She tells The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1lkUKRH ) that those affected were treated with prescription lotion. Employees cleaned and disinfected the units, as well as nearby common areas and spaces.
Scabies is a contagious skin infection caused by microscopic mites which results in intense itching. It can be transmitted through infested clothing or bedding.
The 320-bed recovery center is located at the site of the former Worcester State Hospital.
