NEW YORK (AP) — A redevelopment plan for the Brooklyn Heights library branch has taken a step forward.
Brooklyn Public Library President Linda Johnson says private developer Hudson Companies Inc. would replace the "inefficient" library at 280 Cadman Plaza West with a new building.
The New York Times reports (http://nyti.ms/1MvRu2w ) the plan, approved by a community board Wednesday evening, also calls for the sale of public land and for Hudson to construct 114 affordable-housing units in Clifton Hill.
The proposal next goes before the city's planning commission.
Opponents spoke out against privatizing public space and argued that the library would shrink as a result of the project.
Johnson says $40 million of the anticipated $52 million land sale would go toward other Brooklyn Public Library branches in need.
Construction could begin in 2016.
