CLEARFIELD, Utah (AP) — Authorities say Clearfield police have shot and killed a 31-year-old man who opened fire on officers while standing on the roof of a detached garage.
Benjamin William Heaton, of Layton, died early Wednesday.
Clearfield police Lt. Kelly Bennett says an officer tried to make a traffic stop on a vehicle reported stolen from South Ogden when Heaton pulled the car into a driveway.
The suspect fled on foot and then climbed onto the detached garage.
Bennett says nearby homes were evacuated as members of a SWAT team tried negotiating with Heaton.
Police say Heaton shouted threats at officers and fired shots during the negotiation process. Officers returned fire, killing the man.
A woman who had been in the stolen vehicle with Heaton was arrested for investigation of the alleged theft.
