HOPEWELL, Va. (AP) — A man is dead after being shot by a police officer in Hopewell, Virginia.

Television station WTVR-TV (bit.ly/1Uvmc2E) reports Hopewell Police Deputy Chief Robert Skowron says the incident started Sunday afternoon when a man came to an apartment complex in the 600 block of Winston Churchill Drive to stab his daughter's boyfriend.

Skowron says when an officer arrived he confronted the suspect, who was carrying at least two large butcher knives in the parking lot. Skowron says the attacker advanced on officers. Skowron says an officer fired one shot, which struck the suspect in the abdomen.

The television station reports the man later died at a hospital and that the stabbing victim is in critical condition.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the agency is investigating the shooting.
