NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Several New Haven schools are staying open during April break next week to give youngsters a place safe from gun violence.
Mayor Toni Harp, Superintendent Garth Harries and Police Chief Dean Esserman announced Thursday that six schools will be open from April 14 to 17.
City officials say they're responding to recent gun violence that killed two teenagers.
Each school will have youth programs such as sports and workshops offered by local community organizations working with young people and promoting nonviolence.
Harp says that by keeping schools open and providing some structure and programming officials can help more young people in New Haven learn that idle time is an opportunity to grow and be productive.
The school district will inform families in automated phone messages.
