DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) — A 20-year-old Oklahoma man avoided a possible death sentence by pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of his sister and parents.
Alan Hruby was sentenced to life in prison without parole after entering the pleas Thursday in Stephens County District Court. District Attorney Jason Hicks had sought the death penalty, but said he agreed to a plea deal because the victims' family did not want to go through a trial.
Hruby was charged in the October 2014 shooting deaths of 50-year-old John Hruby; 48-year-old Joy Hruby; and 17-year-old Katherine Hruby at their home in Duncan. John Hruby was the publisher of The Marlow Review.
Police say Hruby killed his family so he could inherit their estate after his parents cut him off financially.
