SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say fingerprints on Lego toys helped them solve a 23-year-old murder case in Utah.

Detectives investigating the murder of 78-year-old Lucille Johnson in 1991 found the toys scattered on the floor of her Salt Lake County home. Her ring and a necklace were also missing.

The trail went cold, but detectives returned to the case this year and tested Johnson's fingernail scrapings for DNA. The results led them to John Sansing, a 47-year-old death row inmate in Arizona.

Investigators also found latent fingerprints on the Legos matching Sansing's then-5-year-old son. Police say Sansing had the Legos when he entered the home.

Sansing was charged with murder in Utah Thursday. No attorney was listed for him and a call to an Arizona attorney was not immediately returned.
