RENO, Nev. (AP) — Tourism officials at Lake Tahoe say they intend to cancel the lake's biggest Fourth of July fireworks show if they can't settle a lawsuit by the end of next week that claims the spent explosives are polluting the alpine waters.
Joseph and Joan Truxler of Zephyr Cove say they plan to meet with lawyers for the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority in Sacramento on Monday to address their suit alleging violations of the Clean Water Act.
The LCVA's board of directors voted Thursday night to end its sponsorship of the 30-year-old tradition if a deal isn't reached by April 4.
The authority's lawyer denies the suit's claims, but says the risks are so great that if they can't settle the suit, it'd be better to get out of the fireworks business.
